MEET YOUR TOUR LEADERS

Your tour leaders are professional horticulturists, with decades of experience in horticultural research, teaching, collecting, and most importantly, gardening!  Wayne, Cynthia, and Brent will give you an in-depth look at gardens around the world, with extensive knowledge of plant ID, landscape design, garden history, and unique facts about the plants and areas you are visiting.

Wayne Mackay, Ph. D.

Wayne Mackay is a lifelong horticulturist, starting his career in the commercial floriculture industry prior to returning to obtain his advanced degrees at the University of Delaware and the University of Maryland. He joined Texas A&M University in 1991, working to domesticate wild species for use in the garden and identify superior floricultural plants.

Wayne recently joined the University of Florida as Professor and Center Director of a leading research program in environmental horticulture. His love of gardening has been stimulated by trips to many of the worlds outstanding gardens, garnering ideas that resulted in his personal garden being featured in Southern Living Magazine.

Cynthia McKenney, Ed.D.

Cynthia McKenney is an avid horticulturist receiving her B.S. and M.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Texas Tech University. She received her doctorate in Higher Education Administration and has been on faculty at Texas Tech University since 1984. Her teaching portfolio includes several plant material identification courses as well as arboriculture and nursery management.

Cynthia has also taken students on garden tours to such places as England, Italy, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. She researches in the area of native plants and wildflowers and actively participates is the enhancement and release of native ornamentals.

H. Brent Pemberton, Ph. D.

Brent Pemberton was born in Temple, Texas and has been involved in gardening since a very early age. He received a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Texas Tech University in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Floriculture from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He has been an Ornamental Plant Research Project Leader in the Texas A&M System since 1982 where he currently holds the
title Professor.

Brent’s research specialties include bedding plant production and greenhouse and garden performance evaluations, field and nursery production of garden roses, plant growth regulators, and landscape water use.  Gardening is a passion fueled by visits to gardens and ornamental plant production centers
in both the U.S. and abroad.
